MEF Proposal Update: Poster Boards

Summary

Logistics

Since the time of the initial proposal, many new developments have transpired. MathSoc has taken on this cause and has had numerous discussions with the Dean concerning the issue. At the moment, it seems likely that the Faculty of Math will implement a general "poster board improvement program" for the Math and Computers building. Survey teams will be sent out to install new poster boards in locations of maximum visibility throughout the building. These locations will include the stairwells mentioned in the original proposal as well as many other areas.

The Dean's Office considers the poster board shortage to be of sufficient merit that it will supply partial funding for this program, and the Secretariat of Plant Ops is considering partial funding as well. The rest of the funding will have to come from students (i.e. MathSoc). The exact costs of the program have yet to be determined, but because of its large scale, we will maintain our original funding request of $1800. The total cost of the program will likely be in excess of $3000. If not all the funds are used, the unused portion will definitely be returned to MEF.

Clarification

The purpose of this proposal is to improve the ability of academic clubs such as the Pure Math Club and the Computer Science Club to promote their talks and initiatives. Because there are only a few poster boards available within the Math and Computers building now (with most of them in a single hallway on the third floor), academic clubs find it nearly impossible to make students aware of interesting talks and projects. Since these clubs do not have the resources needed to acquire and maintain the large number of poster boards needed to promote their events effectively, MathSoc, as the umbrella organization responsible for the welfare of these clubs, is undertaking this initiative. The new poster boards will also have the added benefit of improving awareness of on-campus extra-curricular activities in general.
